MASTER OF THE MISSISSIPPI

Henry P. Bosse died in 1903, but his long-lost photographs seem to pop up everywhere: in recent exhibits at the Weisman Art Museum and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and a fine monograph that focuses on his evocative, blue-tinted cyanotypes of the Upper Mississippi.

Charles Wehrenberg’s just-published Mississippi Blue (Twin Palms, 162 pages, $60) focuses on Bosse’s artistic accomplishments, putting him in the context of the late-19th-century avant-garde. The exquisite tritone reproductions in the Twin Palms edition capture the nuances of Bosse’s photographs, making it easy to assess the merits of Wehrenberg’s thesis.
